Arc Flash And How To Combat It

The Danger of an Arc Flash

Understanding the imminent hazard of an Arc Flash is a prerequisite to sourcing the right PPE that is best suited for a specific job/environment.

Accident statistics across the world reveal that electric arcs are infrequent and random, but the potential always exists when working with electrical infrastructure.

While the arc itself may last only a few seconds, the temperature levels can easily reach anywhere between 10,000 – 19,000°C.

The Role of Protective Clothing Against Arc Flash

Arc-Rated PPE does not just safeguard workers against thermal and power hazards, but also burn injuries caused by the melting of synthetic fibres that are components of contemporary daily wear. Natural fibres including cotton are flammable, while fabric blends based on polyethylene, polyesters and others tend to melt, or ignite depending on their inherent properties.

Arc-Rated Protective Clothing must be able to effectively counter ignition or melting.

Types of Protective Clothing Against Arc Flash

TransNet offers several types of Arc-Rated PPE under the Arc Armour brand that cater to diverse industry and workplace requirements.  Available under different categories, Arc Rated PPE from TransNet uses world leading technologies in their manufacture. The range includes but is not limited to:

  • Arc Flash Coveralls
  • Arc Flash Jackets & Trousers
  • Arc Flash Switching Suits
  • Arc Flash Waterproof PPE
  • Arc Flash Shirts & Polo Shirts
  • Arc Flash Visors / Face Shields
  • Arc Flash Gloves
  • Arc Flash Balaclavas
  • Aramid – Inherent Fibres

Transnet Arc Armour garments are made from an Aramid Inherent Fibre giving both the Employer and Employee the assurance of “Life of Garment” protection. The Arc Rated properties are inherent in the fibre, unlike many garments where the Arc Protection comes by adding a chemical treatment which can be washed out.

PPE should be worn closed/fastened and other applicable PPE should be used simultaneously (Arc Flash Visors/ Face Shields, Arc Flash Gloves, Balaclavas etc.)

Ensuring Compliance

Ensuring compliance of your Arc-Rated PPE requirements requires employers to assess the potential workplace hazards, and team up with a reliable Arc Rated PPE provider to source and equip workers with suitable PPE that best fits the risks involved in a specific job.

Do not be afraid to ask for compliance certificates from your provider, they should be readily available on file, these include but are not limited to; NFPA70E Arc Rating and TTMC-W17.
